Depending on the vacation location my family will normally check my husband's larger suitcase especially if we fly Delta because we have free checked baggage and then we put oddity items like bulk sunscreen and snorkel gear but if it's just me, I have slowly put away my large suitcase and have transitioned to my carry on. I liked to pack everything possible for the “just in case" moments. Each vacation I have taken, I have noted a never used item and removed it from my packing list.
First and foremost not all carry on bags are the same size that meet requirements.
Delta, United, 22 x 14 x 9
Southwest 24 x 16 x 10
Air Canada 21.5 x 15.5 x 9
The first area I had to shave down was my toiletry packing. First and foremost to save money I never buy travel size items with the exception of toothpaste. I have reusable bottles. I like this set for all the small dishes for creams and ointments.
My suggestion:
I also like to use things that can be multiuse like vitamin E oil. I can use it for skin, hair and lips. Or a BB cream for foundation that is also a moisturizer and face SPF. Make up palates in neutral colors can be a bronzer, blush, eyeshadow and give a little lip color with some chapstick and take up minimal space.
For clothes, my style is a mix of Costco, Amazon, SHEIN and a few high end pieces. Everything I pack gets divided and added to compression packing cubes. I try to bring light weight items that can be reused or easily washed in the sink and are quick dry. Make sure you are packing for the weather and layers will be your best friend instead of bulky winter items. For a beach vacay, I like to bring a light scarf for evenings that can double as swimsuit cover up.
Here's one in a great color:
Most of my cover ups also can be used as a dress for excursion type outings. This one is not see through and long enough for me to wear out and about. I have it in navy and white.
Many of my clothes are quick dry and I have a few staples that can be dressed up or down depending on the shoes and top I pair them with. My go to pant is the Lululemon high rise 7/8 pant, paired with a plain fitted white tee and camel colored sandal for a dressier look or activewear for hiking ect. These are a bit pricey but are totally worth it.
For a purse, I splurged again for the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag(smaller version) in black although there are cute dupes on Amazon. This one has great reviews:
Then I have a small backpack with the zipper on the inside as a theft detterent and this doubles as my personal carry on item. It's big enough for a book, travel papers, cords/battery pack and sunglasses. It does come in different sizes but I like this smaller version and it goes on sale often for half the normal price.
In the long run, the less you take the less you have to keep track of. It is doable to pack for a week plus in a carry on.
